Former world jiu-jitsu champion Margarita 'Meggie' Ochoa first fought a bout of flu on Wednesday before she fought in the gold medal match with an injured hip at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

Ochoa overcame them all, including beating Balqees Abdulla of the United Arab Emirates in the final match of the women's –48kg division to bag the country's first gold medal in jiu-jitsu.It is the second gold medal for the Philippines in the ongoing the Asian Games, after pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena set a new Asian record and won last September 30. Ochoa earlier defeated Mongolia's Odgerel Batbayar in the round of 16 via submission.

The 30-year-old Ochoa, who injured her hip in the semifinals, revealed all her struggles to the media after the gold medal match, saying that she vowed to give it all even if she can barely walk.She also said she took medication on Wednesday and is thankful that she was well enouigh to fight in the finals on Thursday.It is the country's first Asian Games gold medal in jiu-jitsu since it was introduced in 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia where the Philippines won a bronze medal, courtesy of Ochoa.
