Among vaccines in the pipeline are others for respiratory syncytial virus , which is the most common reason very young children are hospitalized. Last fall, during an unusually severe year for RSV, record numbers of young children were hospitalized in Ottawa and across North America. In recent weeks, after a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ottawa Public Health staff members have mailed more than 12,000 letters to parents of children born in 2005 and 2015 whose vaccine records are not up to date. In order to attend school, children need proof of vaccines against up to 10 infectious diseases, including diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and others, or be exempted.
There is still work to be done to create a comprehensive digital vaccination records system in Ontario and across Canada, but the pieces are beginning to fall into place. The new federal provincial health transfer agreements, which require provinces and territories to commit to improving how health information is collected, shared, used and reported to Canadians should help push it along.
Jennifer Proulx, director of integrated care delivery at Kids Come First, said the system would make it easier for families to track vaccination schedules and easily book appointments. Crucially, it will also allow families with no primary caregiver to more easily keep children’s vaccinations up to date and help close the vaccination gap that has grown during the pandemic.
