will have a comprehensive, connected, real-time digital vaccination registration system. The advent of new vaccines, including vaccines for adults, adds urgency to the need for a real-time digital vaccine registry, Wilson said. “We have these data systems we have established during COVID, and we need to design them to provide that information as quickly as possible for these new vaccines.
In most cases, the children will have been vaccinated, but parents weren’t aware they were responsible for making sure Ottawa Public Health had a record of the vaccine histories — something that doesn’t happen automatically. Children whose records are not updated face suspension until the situation is resolved. In past years, hundreds of children have received suspension notices.
Ottawa-based CANImmunize, which co-created the COVID-19 vaccine booking and registry system in Nova Scotia and worked with Prince Edward Island and Yukon on theirs, is now working with the Kids Come First health team to build an online system allowing families in four public health units across Eastern Ontario to book vaccines through a system that will be linked to public health and community health centres.
“Even before the pandemic, we had identified that increasing capacity and access to immunization was really important for kids across the region,” Proulx said.
