Ernest John “EJ “Obiena finally took the gold medal in his third year of participation in the men’s pole vault event of Internationales Stadionfest on Sunday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany.
The 27-year-old Obiena cleared 5.92-m in his third attempt to finish ahead of Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen, who missed three tries.American KC Lightfoot also cleared 5.82-m, but settled for third at the countback. The 6’2” Obiena said he has been trying to get a podium at the Berlin, but was not able to do so until now.
“Finally got this outdoor trophy after so many years of coming up short,” said Obiena in his social media post.This allowed Obiena to redeem himself after missing out on a podium at the Zürich leg of the Diamond League last Thursday when he cleared 5.60-m.Obiena strutted away with a silver medal in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday night with a 6-meter leap.
