The District of Oak Bay says the local library branch on Monterey Avenue is temporarily closed as crews conduct asbestos testing.

The library will be shuttered until Monday, Feb. 6, after crews found dust contaminated with asbestos in an isolated area of the branch, the district said Friday.

“The district’s top priority is ensuring the safety of staff and the community. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the Oak Bay Branch of Greater Victoria Public Library will be closed…while the district conducts further testing,” it said in a statement. The library is located at the Monterey Recreation Centre but is the only facility impacted by closure, according to the district.

“All other adjacent areas of the facility, including the Oak Bay Volunteer Services Society and the Hampshire Apartments are not impacted and services at Monterey Recreation Centre remain unaffected,” it added. The library’s book drop is also closed until Feb. 6, but items can be returned at any other GVPL location in the meantime.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.People requiring assistance can call the GVPL customer service line, open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 250-940-4875.
