Hundreds of nurses and midwives will stop work at high-end private hospitals in Sydney for the first time in decades to protest real wage cuts.
Hundreds of nurses and midwives at two of the country’s leading private hospitals are set to walk off the job for the first time in decades in protest over excessive workloads and a pay offer that includes increases up to 3.75 per cent.
But NSWNMA secretary Shaye Candish said that workload demands on the nurses and midwives were “extraordinarily high”.“These nurses and midwives are nearing breaking point because of the demands being placed on them which have been exacerbated by three years of a pandemic,” she said. St Vincent’s has offered its staff a pay rise of more than 10 per cent over three years, including 3.75 per cent from January next year and 3.25 per cent in 2024 and 2025.
Their ratio claim would require two midwives per three mothers in delivery suites, with another midwife in charge, and one midwife per mother in active labour, plus one in charge.
