Nurses at Royal Darwin Hospital's secure mental health facility conducted observations of a schizophrenic patient via CCTV instead of physically checking on her for nine hours before she was found unresponsive, the NT coroner has heard.
Pukumani Alimankinni, as she is known for cultural reasons, died at the secure Joan Ridley Unit mental health ward after being admitted with symptoms of schizophrenia.
Counsel assisting the coroner Beth Wild said Ms Alimankinni had spent three days in the emergency department waiting for a bed. "I was concerned she may have shared something synthetic … either way her presentation needed to come into the hospital."Ms Alimankinni was flown to RDH where she spent three days in the emergency department waiting for a bed at JRU.
Ms Alimankinni was admitted to JRU on August 6 and was noted to be "highly distressed and disruptive". A nurse noticed Ms Alimankinni's chest wasn't moving at 5:42am and the coroner heard it took another seven minutes for CPR to commence. "Thank you for coming, I know this is a sad time," Judge Armitage said to one of Ms Alimankinni's sisters.
