Former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on Thursday said his late parents, Ninoy and Cory Aquino – two leaders who fought for the country’s democracy during martial law, continue to serve as inspiration to the Filipino people to fight for what is “right” for the country.
In his speech during the mass for Cory’s 10th death anniversary at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City, Noynoy recalled how Cory became both a mother and father figure for their family during the “dark times” of martial law.
The late former president Corazon Aquino died on August 1, 2009 at 76 years old after more than a year of battling colon cancer. The former president said his late parents were both reminders that the country, for once, had its leaders who fought for what is “right” despite the “dark situations” brought by martial law.
