“It was the night before Nicklas Backstrom’s wedding,” Markstrom said, referring to the Washington Capitals’ star centre. “I told Tre, ‘You know, usually I’m asleep by now, but it’s a big occasion.’ ”The Flames made major headlines with the news that they’d acquired setup machine Jonathan Huberdeau and minute-munching defenceman MacKenzie Weegar, plus a prospect and a future first-round pick, from the Florida Panthers.

Treliving was looking from some intel from Markstrom, who was drafted by the Panthers and was a teammate of Huberdeau for parts of two seasons when both were breaking into the league.Article content “I think he was breaking curfew that night,” Treliving grinned, reminiscing about that long-distance chit-chat with his starting netminder. “As soon as I dialled him … I guess I knew the time change, but I wasn’t really looking at my watch. I said, ‘Oh, Marky is probably sleeping.’ And when he answered, I said, ‘Hey, why aren’t you sleeping?!?’

“The hockey community is small and you’re always doing your homework. So as things were coming together, we had talked to a bunch of people and Marky was a guy who had played with Jonathan. Now, I knew it was dated, it was a while ago that they played together, but Marky is a guy that I really have a lot of respect for his opinion on things, and he spoke very highly of Jonathan.”
