Norway has put on hold its plans to issue deep-sea mining licenses next year, following opposition from environmental groups and international institutions. The Socialist Left Party, an ally of the centre-left government, blocked the move as part of a deal to support the 2025 budget. The decision is seen as a temporary setback by the government.
Oslo, Norway – Norway has suspended plans to start giving licences for deep-sea mining next year that had faced opposition from environment groups and international institutions, a party allied with the centre-left government said on Sunday.
The energy ministry did not immediately comment on the move. But Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoer said it was only a postponement. “We should be able to accept that,” he told TV2 television. Norway had argued that it did not want to rely on China for minerals essential for renewable energy technology. The government said there were tough safeguards in its proposals for mining and that licences could be revoked.
