Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rate of severe food insecurity in the country, said Food First NL's CEO, Joshua Smee.Twenty-six per cent of households in N.L. are food insecure, he said, and nine per cent of people in the province are severely food insecure.“Our food prices in N.L. have gone up higher and have been higher relative to people's incomes than the rest of the country.
“So, someone might be moderately food insecure this week, and then they’ll pop a tire on their car,” said Smee. Smee added that there has been a structural failure along the line because things should have never gotten to a point where people are compromising bills or considering stealing. “Since the start of the pandemic, and it seems to be getting more prolific all the time, it has a lot to do with the fact that it's much easier now to sell stolen items online.”Cormier said the biggest concern is that they're seeing more organized crime. That isn't a kid stealing a chocolate bar, it's groups targetting specific products.
“Inflation has affected the farmer, the manufacturer, the trucker, the distribution centers, all the way down the line to the retailer. The price has increased through the system."That's the entire idea for organized criminals, Cormier said. Their focus is on stealing and selling very quickly so they can be gone and off to the next.A nationwide problem
“Inflation has affected the farmer, the manufacturer, the trucker, the distribution centers, all the way down the line to the retailer. The price has increased through the system," said Cormier.
