President Duterte won't order another extension of martial law in Mindanao

This is after Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo announced that the Office of the President will not extend it for another year.

In a press briefing, Panelo added that it was based on a unanimous decision by the President's defense advisers. He added that the Palace is confident security forces will be able to maintain peace and security in the southern region without extending martial rule. Mindanao was first placed under martial law in May 2017, following the Marawi siege in Lanao del Sur. Government forces battled the ISIS-inspired Maute group, which led to the deaths of 900 terrorists, 47 civilians, 165 government troops, and the displacement of thousands of residents. That martial law declaration was valid until the end of 2017.
