Nine members of the New People's Army (NPA) surrendered to the Philippine Army in Northern Samar, citing hunger and lack of community support.
Nine members of the New People's Army ( NPA ) laid down their arms and surrendered to the 19th Infantry Battalion based in Catubig, Northern Samar . These communist rebels, hailing from the Sub-Regional Guerrilla Unit (SRGU), Sub-Regional Committee Emporium, cited severe hunger and dwindling community support as the primary reasons for their decision to abandon armed struggle.
The NPA members surrendered an array of weaponry, including an R4 rifle, two M16 rifles, two improvised M14 rifles, a carbine rifle, an anti-personnel mine, and two bandoliers. The surrender marked a significant victory in the ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in Northern Samar. Lieutenant Colonel John Maraggun, Commanding Officer of the 19th Infantry Battalion, emphasized the unwavering commitment of security forces and local government units in their pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous Northern Samar. He extended a warm welcome to the former rebels, assuring them of comprehensive support during their reintegration into society. Major General Valeriano de Leon, Commander of the 8th Infantry Division, underscored the government's unwavering commitment to assisting NPA rebels who aspire to embrace a peaceful life. He affirmed that the government's objective is to facilitate their seamless reintegration into the community and demonstrate the tangible benefits of a peaceful existence, encompassing a better quality of life and a secure environment. The 19th Infantry Battalion was commended for its exemplary dedication and successful facilitation of the rebels' reintegration. To ensure a smooth transition, the battalion is collaborating closely with local government units to provide immediate financial assistance and other essential benefits to the former combatants. The surrenderers are also undergoing a comprehensive process under the Local Social Integration Program (LSIP) and the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP). Moreover, debriefing, healing, and reconciliation sessions are being conducted to foster their harmonious reintegration into society
