The National Food Authority (NFA) is ready to release buffer stocks of rice if a food security emergency is declared due to rising rice prices. Local government units (LGUs) have expressed interest in purchasing NFA rice for distribution to the public at subsidized prices.
The National Food Authority ( NFA ) has stated its readiness for the anticipated declaration of a food security emergency concerning rice. NFA Administrator Larry Lacson confirmed that several local government units (LGUs) have expressed interest in purchasing NFA rice for distribution upon the emergency declaration. 'We are ready. As we speak, our neighboring regions are already delivering rice to NCR, in addition to our existing stock.
We are preparing for this,' he stated during a Super Radyo dzBB interview. 'We are ready in the NFA to release the stocks, but I think we wait a little before these are made available to the LGUs to sell to the public,' he added. The Department of Agriculture (DA) previously indicated that NFA rice could be released as early as February 4th, but the distribution timeline remains subject to the discretion of local governments. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. confirmed that his office received a National Price Coordinating Council resolution recommending the emergency declaration. If approved, this would empower the NFA to release buffer stocks and commence purchasing rice from farmers during the upcoming harvest season. Lacson revealed that the initial release will involve 300,000 sacks, with a potential increase to 450,000-500,000 depending on LGU and Kadiwa store demand. NFA rice will be sold to LGUs at P36 per kilo and to consumers at P38 per kilo, with strict regulations prohibiting retailers from exceeding this price. 'To be honest, a significant aid would be for retailers to speed up distribution. But for now, that's not yet possible. We don't have a direct channel to them,' Lacson stated. — DVM, GMA Integrated New
