‘It’s so rewarding to sit with them and to hear what they just did’: Brian Downton who works with children facing trauma and addictions issues

Brian Downton Keith Gosse/The Telegram - Keith GosseST. JOHN'S, N.L. — After attending rehab at Humberwood Treatment Centre, Brian Downton was inspired and determined to help others struggling with addiction.

“My initial plan wasn’t to work with youth, it was to work with other addicts,” he said in a telephone interview. “ my final work term from school was at the Tuckamore Centre, which is a treatment centre for youth and they … have a music room.A musician since the late 1980s, Downton got the idea to combine his love of recording and making music with his new passion of helping children with trauma and addiction issues.

Years ago, great lengths would have to be travelled just to demo a song, Downton said, referencing the difficulty of acquiring a basic four-track recording machine early in his musical journey and his foray into recording onto VHS tapes using his father’s VCR. He learns something new about recording every day, he said. And now, since he started the Youth On Track project, where youth in care join him in the studio to record covers or originals, his passion for recording has taken on a whole new meaning.
