IN Southeast Asia, the average screen time for children ages 6 to 14 is about 2.77 hours per day, exceeding the recommended two hours a day, according to a systematic review.

In Malaysia alone, over 90 percent of those ages 13 to 17 have a social media account.'The massive digitalization that followed the Covid-19 pandemic and the easier access to the internet have allowed for an increase in children's online use. But this increase has revealed disturbing trends in Southeast Asia,' United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Counter-Cybercrime coordinator Joshua James said.

From 2019 to 2022, Malaysia reported 850,000 abuse reports. Laos registered 25,000 in the same year. Vietnam registered almost 3 million reports during 2019 and 2022, while Thailand reported close to 2 million in that period.Nearly 8 million were reported in the Philippines from 2019 to 2022. These numbers are solely based on reports registered through CyberTipline, a US-based platform where child sexual exploitation can be reported from around the world.
