More time for rest and relaxation has a long-term effect on our cognitive health. 🧠
A new study explained why thinking hard for several hours makes individuals tired and influences how people make low-cost action decisions.on Thursday, found that prolonged intense cognitive work causes a buildup of potentially toxic byproducts in the prefrontal cortex of a human’s brain. This buildup then affects an individual’s control over their decisions, causing one to do things that do not require effort or to do nothing at all as the cognitive fatigue takes hold..
The study found that the group who needed to think hard for work showed signs of fatigue, such as reduced pupil dilation. The same group, which had higher levels of the amino acid glutamate in the synapses of the prefrontal cortex, also shifted toward actions that proposed rewards quickly with little effort.
“Influential theories suggested that fatigue is a sort of illusion cooked up by the brain to make us stop whatever we are doing and turn to a more gratifying activity,” co-author Mathias Pessiglione of Pitié-Salpêtrière University.
