A new vaccine against Japanese encephalitis virus in pigs has been developed by Queensland researchers.
UQ’s Dr Jody Hobson-Peters, an expert in mosquito-borne viruses, said once that happened they quickly started turning their established work on flaviviruses – the family to which JEV belongs – into a practical vaccine for pigs. In addition to its danger to humans, JEV is a big problem for the pork industry, with pigs dying and miscarrying as a result of the virus. Her colleague Professor Roy Hall said the vaccine performed extremely well.
In 99 per cent of cases the virus is asymptomatic and people might not even be aware they have contracted it, but the results can be dire for the 1 per cent who do.
