Fossils of a new hominin species discovered in a cave in Cagayan Valley were exhibited at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia on July 1.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said fossils of the Homo luzonensis were presented during a public lecture at the Cultural Center Kambri in the said university.

More than 90 students, professors, scientists, archaeologists and researchers, and members of the Filipino-Australian community attended the lecture. An international group of scientists excavated thirteen fossil bones and teeth of the newly discovered species in Callao Cave on April 22. According to the scientists, the remains were from at least 3 individuals.

The discovery marked the second time in the 21st century that a bygone member of the human family has been found on southeast Asian islands.
