BREAKING: A new Omicron subvariant raising major concerns in the US for its rapid spread during the busy holiday season has now been detected in Australia. 7NEWS
“Over the last week, 107,199 cases of COVID-19 were reported across Australia,” the Department of Health and Aged Care said.
The new subvariant of Omicron, named XBB.1.5, is a relative of the Omicron XBB variant, which is a recombinant of the Omicron BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 subvariants. Epidemiologist and the World Health Organisation technical lead on COVID Maria Van Kerkhove said that the estimated 37 per cent increase in US cases caused by the subvariant in December was concerning. It is not yet clear whether the new subvariant XBB.1.5 poses more of a danger than earlier Omicron subvariants, but experts believe it may be more contagious.
White House COVID response co-ordinator Dr Ashish Jha said XBB.1.5 was “probably” more “immune evasive” than other Omicron variants and that it may be “more inherently contagious”. “ may be. It binds more tightly to the human ACE receptor. might affect contagiousness,” he wrote on Twitter. If you’d like to view this content, please adjust your
