YARMOUTH, N.S. — Yarmouth’s premier tourist attraction is kicking off its latest season with the completion of a new addition, a new restaurant and a new boss., just ahead of the famed lighthouse’s newest season of opening up the inside of the lighthouse to public viewing.
Rae has big shoes to fill in the role, replacing Jennifer Wilkins who, during her time as site manager for Cape Forchu, oversaw Yarmouth County’s most famous tower open up to the public for the first time in decades in 2021.Whale of a tale takes shape at Cape Forchu Lighthouse in Yarmouth County “Unfortunately for Cape Forchu, they really haven’t had a summer that hasn’t been interrupted by something since the municipality took back the property,” says Rae, pointing out that ongoing construction, the COVID-19 pandemic and last year’s Barrington Lake wildfires all led to reduced numbers of travelers in the region.
“Nichole’s passion for good food has helped her build a name for herself as one of the best in the business,” the social media post reads. “Now, the south shore’s beloved chef has personally designed the menu at Cape Forchu to tantalize your taste buds and showcase the fresh, local flavours of the region.”
“There are two platforms — one is fully accessible and the other one requires stairs and it covers 50 per cent of the entire facing of the fog building — it is really quite nice,” says Rae. “I had a couple of professional photographers here … and they were over the moon. They couldn’t believe how fantastic it was and the opportunity for them to get those vistas.”
While in recent years visitors have had the opportunity to ‘Climb the Light,’ – ascending the spiral stairs within the lighthouse to reach the lantern room – the addition of the accessible ramp and viewing platforms expands the accessibility of Cape Forchu Lighthouse.
