It will be a make or break for broadcast giant ABS-CBN network as a third and final attempt to have its legislative franchise extended has been filed in the House of Representatives.
The Lopez family-owned ABS-CBN broadcast network’s legislative franchise is due to expire by March, 2020.
In House Bill 676, Nueva Ecija Rep. Micaela Violago proposed that one of the leading broadcast network of the country be granted a fresh 25-year franchise extension.On the other hand, the 17th Congress approved Republic Act No. 10925 that amended RA 7262, extending the legislative franchise of Republic Broadcasting System, Inc. which operates GMA 7 network, ABS-CBN’s stiffest rival.
ABS-CBN is operating under the authority of Republic Act No. 7966, granting the network a legislative franchise that is due to expire next year. Under the 1987 Constitution, bills concerning legislative franchises will emanate from the House of Representatives.
