Negros Oriental has been declared under a state of calamity following the eruption of Mount Kanlaon. The declaration allows the provincial government to utilize its quick response fund to aid evacuees.
Negros Oriental is now under a state of calamity after the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) approved the recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council during a special session on Friday, December 27.The approved resolution cited the adverse impact of the Kanlaon Volcano eruption on the province.
December 26 data showed that there were 1,778 families or 5,802 individuals in 10 evacuation camps in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, while 643 families or 2,014 individuals were living with friends and relatives.The families were evacuated from the Kanlaon Volcano's 6-kilometer danger zone radius.The declaration comes after Vallehermoso town declared a state of calamity.The legal requirement of at least two LGUs had been met as Canlaon City has remained in a state of calamity since the June 3 eruption.The state of calamity will enable the provincial government to use its quick response fund to address the needs of the evacuees in Negros Oriental.Edna Lhou Masicampo, Canlaon City information officer-designate, said on Friday that the city's Quick Response Fund has been depleted and the P30 million from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is also slowly draining.Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Central Visayas distributed food packs and P3,000 cash assistance to families displaced within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ).Canlaon City Mayor Batchuk Cardenas also urged DSWD to include evacuees staying with relatives in the aid program.Residents outside the PDZ were advised to return home as fears of a major eruption have subsided.Neighboring Negros Occidental was declared under a state of calamity on December 13, with a price freeze imposed on basic necessities and prime commodities, to address the effects of December 9 Mt.
