Negros Occidental experiences a significant increase in typhoid fever cases, prompting a public health advisory and calls for preventive measures.

BACOLOD CITY — Negros Occidental has witnessed a dramatic surge in typhoid cases, with a 100 percent increase recorded from January 1st to 18th, 2025. Provincial health officer Dr. Girlie Pinongan revealed on Monday that 80 cases were reported during this period compared to 40 cases in the same period last year. Tragically, two fatalities have been reported, a 69-year-old male from Victorias City and a 72-year-old female from Isabela town.

To address this alarming trend, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson issued an advisory last week urging the public to remain vigilant about the escalating typhoid fever cases within the province. He further directed city and municipal health offices to implement food handler training programs for vendors and employees working in food establishments.Typhoid fever, also known as enteric fever, is a highly contagious disease transmitted through contaminated food and water or through close contact with infected individuals. Common symptoms include prolonged high fever, headaches, weakness, loss of appetite, diarrhea or constipation, and abdominal pain. Data indicates that Kabankalan City has the highest number of typhoid cases with 16 reported, followed by Hinobaan with 13 cases. In its advisory, the provincial government emphasizes preventive measures to combat the spread of typhoid. These include avoiding the consumption of untreated water, boiling water before drinking, thoroughly cooking food, and covering it to prevent contamination from flies and other insects. The advisory also recommends consuming food within four hours of preparation, avoiding unsanitary street-vended foods, washing hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before eating, and maintaining clean surroundings free from garbage to discourage fly breeding. Antibiotics can be prescribed for adults as directed by a physician, according to Dr. Pinongan.
