The Navotas City government proudly celebrated its 119th anniversary with a special recognition of the Top 10 Most Outstanding Fisherfolk, reaffirming the city's title as the 'Fishing Capital of the Philippines .' Mayor John Rey Tiangco, alongside his brother, Rep. Tobias Tiangco, led the city officials in honoring the fishermen whose dedication and resilience have sustained generations and propelled the city's progress.

The Tiangco brothers lauded the invaluable contributions of Navotas' fishing community, stating that they are the reason behind the city's prestigious title. Mayor Tiangco emphasized, 'You are the reason why our city was known to be the 'Fishing Capital of the Philippines.' This day, we celebrate and honor you all for your sacrifices to your family and your community.' Leading the list of this year's Top 10 Most Outstanding Fisherfolk was Renato C. Abad of Barangay Tangos North. Abad, a fisherman since the age of 15, transformed his humble beginnings into a success story. He supports his family of six, helped three of his children graduate from college, and founded the Small Commercial Fishing Consumers Cooperative of Navotas. His achievements serve as a testament to the boundless opportunities that arise from hard work and innovation within the fishing industry, according to the local government.To qualify for the Top 10 Fisherfolk recognition, nominees must be registered Navotenyo fishermen endorsed by their respective barangay and barangay fisheries and aquatic resources management council chairperson. They also need to be exemplary citizens with no pending or ongoing legal issues and have accomplished milestones worthy of emulation and inspiration for fellow fisherfolk. The awardees received a range of incentives, including cash prizes from ₱4,000 to ₱10,000, plaques of recognition, and additional support like groceries and rice. All Top 10 awardees are eligible to nominate a family member for the 'NavotaAs Ulirang Pamilyang Mangingisda' Scholarship, which provides a yearly allowance of ₱16,500 for transportation and food, along with a ₱1,500 book stipend per academic year. The 'Araw ng Mangingisda' also showcased the fisherfolk's strength and skill through various competitions. Boat race winners received prizes up to ₱20,000, while participants in the net mending contest won up to ₱5,000. All competitors received a 10-kilo bag of rice. Mayor Tiangco highlighted the significance of the event, stating, 'The Araw ng Mangingisda stands as a powerful reminder of the city's rich heritage and the enduring role of its fishing community in shaping Navotas' identity.' Representative Tiangco echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the celebration is not only a tribute to the past but also a recognition of the brighter future that awaits Navotenyos
