I FIRST read the work of Resil Mojares in the Philippine literature class of Professor Mariel Francisco at Ateneo de Manila University in 1982. I was a legal management major who had shifted to Interdisciplinary Studies and was taking my first literature subject that semester.

I remember the story as part of the last batch of works that we read in class. These were stories written from 1970-1972 before President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. declared martial law. The stories were what you would now call postmodern. They were animated by the spirit of play, fragmented and stylized, with their granular look at individual subjectivity. They were at the frontier of a new kind of writing — until martial law brought everything to a halt.Born on Sept.

Mojares wisely focused on the lives of the three intellectuals as a prism to examine the lives of the country's national heroes but also delved into the broader questions of how ideas shape nations and how flesh-and-blood intellectuals help in forging the national consciousness. What sets 'Brains of the Nation' apart is its deep interdisciplinary approach, seamlessly merging history, literary criticism and cultural analysis.
