ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Newfoundland and Labrador government is seeking public feedback on getting rid of public exams from the public school systems starting in the 2025-26 school year.Public consultations with parents and educators will kick off in the fall on proposed options for assessing high school students as the development process continues.
The Department of Education said it is looking to implement a new assessment approach for literacy and numeracy that isn’t attached to a certain subject or course but still measures a student’s skills in realistic situations. The province is also considering modular course evaluations as part of the standard assessments for students. The tests would be computer-based and happen in select 3000-level courses like English, mathematics and laboratory sciences, and take place three times a year.
During the consultation and development stage, school administrators and educators will continue to evaluate students using tests like individual and group projects, unit tests and year-end/semester tests. “Improving the assessment process is vital to give all students an equal opportunity to succeed in learning and expanding their knowledge throughout their school years, and allows teachers to have more tools available to evaluate them,” said Education Minister Krista Lynn Howell.
“Updating the assessment process is a part of transforming and modernizing education for students in our province so they can reach academic goals to the best of their ability.”
