JOHN'S, N.L. — In response to SaltWire Network’s story on Wednesday, Feb. 8, which found the provincial government was considering enacting pay transparency on April 1, the Department of Environment and Climate Change said in an emailed statement Wednesday afternoon the materials referenced by SaltWire were drafts, “and draft materials are always subject to change.
The department went on to say that “it is important that we take the time to get this right and that we hear from all relevant stakeholders before setting an implementation date.” According to Minister Bernard Davis’s draft speaking notes, and the comments and edits made to them, at one point in early October the government contemplated enacting pay transparency by April 1, 2023, the same date the pay equity portion of the legislation for public-sector employees takes effect.
By the time the announcement was made on Oct. 17, the government said pay transparency would be enacted sometime in the future after an extensive consultation process.
