The tournament could be robbed of another major drawcard as officials scramble to determine the exact whereabouts of the two-time women’s champion
Champion at Melbourne Park in 2019 and 2021, Osaka is apparently back in Los Angeles after being tagged in a photo from a pilates studio in suburban LA but has shown no signs of preparing for the Open.
Officials appear quietly resigned to Osaka not competing at Melbourne Park from 16-29 January as concerns grow that the four-time grand slam champion may not return to the court at all. The Japanese star has not played since withdrawing from the second round in Tokyo last September with abdominal pains, and has won only one completed match since last May.
If and when Osaka withdraws from the season-opening slam, she will join a void of greats and former world No 1s not playing the 2023 Australian Open.

Half a million missing migrant workers is ‘breathing space’ for Australian govtFormer Speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop says the half a million people missing from migration work is “breathing space” for the Australian government. “If it is half a million who would’ve come that didn’t come, then that’s so much breathing space,” Ms Bishop told Sky News host James Morrow. “If you just keep bringing people in and think, well, hopefully because they really want to be here and want to work hard, maybe they’ll create some new businesses, which many of them have done for which we’re very grateful. “If you look at the numbers of people that this government’s likely to bring in, watch, it’ll be family reunion.”
