I'm not condoning illegal behaviour but I also think there should be a law against food insecurity.
On one hand, I seem to remember being told by one parent that I shouldn’t worry about it. We were out of the store, and no one stopped us. But I pleaded with my other parent to take me back so I could pay for it. And we did and that was it. I had appeased my conscience and felt I did the right thing, even though I technically had “gotten away with it.”
But the bottom line is that a connection was drawn between a downturn in the economy and the increase in thefts from stores. I’m seeing more security at the grocery store these days. Gates to funnel you in past security cameras. Police officers who are being hired as loss prevention staff are wandering aisles and standing by exits. I mentioned a few weeks ago about the woman I saw who was stopped and stripped of her bag as she was trying to walk past the electronic theft prevention system. And with the high price of groceries, it’s obvious some people are going to be stealing to feed themselves or their families.
