MOST parents would not want their daughters to take up the rough-and-tumble sport of football. But Parameswari Sellaparama is unlike most parents.
It’s not surprising, considering that she has been an athlete since she was 10. She was a school runner in the 100m, 200m 400m and the relays, having represented Penang in the national schools meet and Sukma Perak in 1994.
But a Tamil movie released in 2019 changed things. “Bigil” told of women who faced adversities just to play football and Parames was hooked. And the women’s team arose. Parames and her teammates emerged champion in a tournament held among some 100 women who signed up. She also captained their team to finish second in the national-level Poovai Cup organised by the Malaysian Indian FA and got called up by Penang City for the Tun Sharifah Rodziah Cup last year.
Several others from the team were called up for Penang and for Sungai Petani-based Real CJ in the National Women’s League.
