Peter Dutton and the Coalition have secured a solid victory in the byelection for the Gold Coast seat of Fadden, providing a sorely-needed morale boost.
While Labor never expected to win the seat, it has suffered a swing against it, which does not augur well in a state in which it holds just 5 of the 30 seats and which will be important at the next general election.Mr Dutton said the “resounding result” had reflected the national mood.
With about one third of votes counted, Liberal National Party candidate Cameron Caldwell was enjoying a swing towards him of more than 2 per cent, giving him 63 per cent of the vote against Labor’s Letitia Del Fabbro who had 37 per cent.It is the first win of significance for the Coalition at a state or federal level since the Tasmanian election in May 2021, and followed the Liberal Party’s historicThe Fadden byelection was caused by the resignation of former minister Stuart Robert.
As counting continued, Labor, which never expected to win the seat, was claiming a pyrrhic victory of sorts because the swing to the Coalition did not reflect the 4 per cent average for byelections. While Mr Dutton campaigned in Fadden, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose face appeared on LNP posters at polling booths, visited just once. Initially, he did not want to contest the byelection.
Campaigning in Fadden on polling day, Treasurer Jim Chalmers set the benchmark for Labor success as a fighting defeat.
