NSW Police are right to oppose pro-Palestinian rallies this weekend on the eve of the October 7 massacre anniversary.
The fast-unravelling situation in the Middle East makes it imperative that planned pro-Palestinian rallies in Sydney do not go ahead this weekend.
Last weekend, the appearance of protesters brandishing prohibited symbols of Hezbollah – a designated terrorist organisation since 2021– marred a rally outside Town Hall. NSW Police seized two Hezbollah flags and on Wednesday a woman who allegedly carried the flag was arrested. Other protesters held photos of Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader killed in Israeli strikes.
The police proposal to stop the protests coincides with the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel. Pro-Palestinian rallies have been conducted for 51 consecutive weeks. Our response to the Middle East tinderbox that has caused such divisions now requires a cool and logical response, which first and foremost should protect the people of Sydney against the wilful madness of a handful of provocateurs.
