Australia will buy an artillery system from the United States that has helped Ukraine defend itself against Russia, as well as new long-range naval missiles.

Australia is spending up to $2 billion on a long-range artillery rocket system that will help give the military a strike range of 500 kilometres before the end of the decade.

The HIMARS will include a weapon-locating radar by Australian defence contractor CEA Technologies to detect and respond to land, air and maritime threats. “But, ultimately, we’ll be using a missile that has a range of over 499 kilometres,” he said in reference to PrSM. “So this is a massive increase in the strike capability of the Australian army.

“The rapid acquisition of those missiles is a direct response to the deteriorating strategic circumstances we face and the need to increase the capability of the ADF.”The total cost of HIMARS and Naval Strike Missiles is between $1 billion and $2 billion. Mr Conroy said the war in Ukraine had highlighted the need to have longer-range strike capability and Labor had sped up the timeline for a decision to late 2022, instead of in 2023, when it was going to be made under the former government.
