A major winter storm brought heavy snow, ice, and hazardous travel conditions to the Midwest, with warnings of some of the heaviest snowfall in a decade and significant disruptions to transportation.

WASHINGTON — A powerful winter storm system brought blizzard and ice storm conditions to the Midwest early Sunday, prompting warnings of some of the heaviest snowfall in a decade and significant disruptions to transportation. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of 15 inches (38 centimeters) or more of snow in some areas, making travel extremely hazardous with impassable roads.

Accumulations of up to a half-inch of ice in some areas, combined with strong wind gusts causing widespread tree damage, could lead to prolonged power outages. The storm, the first major one of 2025, has already begun to impact travel. Video footage from the Weather Channel showed cars skidding off icy highways in Kansas and tractor-trailers jackknifing dangerously. The NWS issued blizzard warnings for Kansas and Missouri, with a belt of winter storm and ice storm warnings stretching to the US capital on the East Coast. This unusually broad swath, covering 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers), is under immediate threat. American Airlines issued a travel advisory covering 46 airports from Kansas to New Jersey. A mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow hit Kansas early Sunday morning. Storm chaser Brian Emfinger reported on X that roads around Kansas City resembled 'a skating rink.' The NWS forecast predicted the worst was yet to come, with 'blizzard conditions' and winds up to 50 mph (80 kmh) expected in the state. As the storm progresses through Monday, the NWS said the snow will significantly reduce visibility. A band of eight to 14 inches of snow is expected from northeast Missouri through the Central Appalachians. Areas around Washington could see up to 10 inches overnight Sunday into Monday, making hazardous travel and closures likely, according to the Washington Post
