While adding seaweed to feed is effective for any ruminating livestock, this is a potential game changer for the Alberta beef industry, especially in the face of federal targets to lower greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture industry by 30 per cent by 2030. Janice Tranberg, the president and CEO of the Alberta Cattle Feeders Association, said a number of companies are working on seaweed additives for cattle feed. This includes Synergraze and Kinley’s FutureFeed. These additives are critical for feedlots to reduce emissions, in comparison to cow-calf operations that can utilize pastureland as a natural carbon sink.
