Synergraze’s breakthrough was in developing a proprietary method of processing a wide variety of seaweed to increase their bioactive concentration comparable to Asparagopsis. This will allow the company to hit similar methane-reduction levels in species of seaweed native to the Pacific West Coast.Article content

Tamara Loiselle, CEO and founder at Synergraze Sustainable Agriculture, has developed a seaweed-based cattle feed additive that will significantly lower methane emissions from cattle.Loiselle, who studied at the University of Alberta’s Environmental Science Faculty of Agriculture, said methane emissions are 28 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas than carbon dioxide.

“Already, a feedlot is one way that we’re being more efficient and having less impact on the environment,” she said, noting the increased efficiency of getting cattle up to market weight. “But if we want to target methane specifically and we want to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions from where we currently are, certainly feed additives are going to be the main way to do that.
