MANILA, Philippines: Meralco leaned on its unforgiving defense to hold Magnolia its lowest output in franchise history via a 74-51 victory on Sunday in the PBA 48th Season Philippine Cup at the Philsports Arena.

The Bolts' defensive clamps were so effective that they held the Hotshots to just 17.9 percent field goal shooting in the halftime. Meralco led, 34-21 after the first half. In the end, Magnolia shot a woeful 25 percent from the field, while no player scored in double digits.Ian Sangalang led the Hotshots with just eight points, while veterans Paul Lee and Mark Barroca only scored six and five, respectively.The loss practically took the life out of the Hotshots' bid for a top 2 finish that rewards a twice-beat-incentive heading to the quarterfinals.Meralco improved to 5-5, in a tie with Rain or Shine and Terrafirma at sixth to eighth spots.
