After competing in the recent JJIF World Championship in Greece, Meggie Ochoa, an Asian Games champion, is considering retiring from the Philippine jiu-jitsu team. While she plans to continue competing individually, she states she will no longer represent the national team. Ochoa reflects on the tournament, emphasizing the importance of bringing glory to God and loving others, regardless of individual performance results. The Philippine team achieved a historic medal haul at the championships.
MEGGIE Ochoa is hinting on retiring as a member of the Philippine jiu-jitsu team, following the recent Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) World Championship for adults held in Greece last October. In an Instagram private message to The Manila Times on Thursday night, Ochoa confirmed that while she will continue competing, she will not be playing for the national team.'I may possibly compete in the future but not anymore for the (Philippine) team,' she said.
On Wednesday night, the Asian Games champion recounted the most recent tournament in Greece.'I gave what I had at that time, but was not able to bring home a medal from the competition. The Lord taught me so much about what it meant to bring glory to His Name. He tested the genuineness of my intent to pursue my athletic career for His glory, whether I liked the result of my individual performance or not,' Ochoa wrote on Wednesday night on her Instagram handle. While Ochoa did not win a medal, the national team was able to bring home a gold medal, two silvers, and six bronzes with the lone gold coming from Kimberly Anne Custodio in the women's 45-kilogram category. In Ochoa's category, the women's 48 kg, teammate Jollirine Co grabbed the silver medal.'The whole JJIF Worlds 2024 experience was one of my most eye-opening competitions. Here, the Lord graciously allowed an abundance of joy seeing how my teammates performed so well and just being so grateful that this was the year that the PH Team brought the most number of medals in the history of joining the JJIF Worlds,' Ochoa said.'The team surely has come a long way and this growth is something that should be recognized. The Lord shifted my attention from self to Him and to others reminding me of our overall ethic in life for those who are in Christ to love God and love others above all. He allowed me to see the various ways of bringing glory to His name beyond medals and performance throughout the experience of the JJIF Worlds 202
