The JB mayor said that despite efforts to develop and beautify the city, irresponsible individuals still vandalised public facilities.

Mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman said that despite efforts to develop and beautify Johor Baru, there were still irresponsible individuals who vandalised public facilities.

“Each year, the council spends a significant amount of money on repairing the vandalised facilities in the city including repainting walls to cover up graffiti.“Such irresponsible actions not only taint the city’s image, it also reflects the people’s lack of civic awareness,” he said. The mayor said those found vandalising public property could be fined RM500 and have their equipment seized under the MBJB Vandalism By-law 2003.“Those with information about vandalism are encouraged to lodge a police report or complain to the local council to help curb the issue,” he added.

Mohd Noorazam said MBJB valued creativity but it should be done at the spaces designated for mural and graffiti works such as the shophouses along Jalan Trus. “However, those who express their creativity at the designated areas are reminded to produce artwork with themes related to Johor Baru’s history and heritage, in line with MBJB’s vision for the city.Jalan Trus, which runs parallel to Jalan Wong Ah Fook in Johor Baru city centre, is home to some lively street art.
