Viewership of Australia's vital victory over Canada dwarfed that for the final day's play of the fifth Ashes test, with Channel Seven expecting even higher numbers as the Matildas chase World Cup glory.
The vital 4-0 victory locked Australia into the Round of 16 at the Women's World Cup and saw the Matildas achieve their highest viewership of the tournament so far.
The official figures released by OzTAM have 2.45 million people recorded as watching the game's broadcast. A shock loss against Nigeria last week had seen the team and head coach Tony Gustavsson come under intense scrutiny, as the attacking flair normally associated with their game deserted them in the first two matches.
Two neat touches later and the ball rifled past a despairing Kailen Sheridan in the Canadian goal, sending a capacity Melbourne crowd into raptures. However, it proved to be in vain as Foord and Cately again caused havoc on the left, before the former pulled a ball back to find Mary Fowler unmarked in the six-yard box with the forward doing just enough to push the ball over the line.
