The Matildas have stunningly topped their group and kept their dreams of a World Cup victory alive with an emphatic 4-0 win over Canada.
The game was a do-or-die affair with the Matildas needing a win to ensure they progressed onto the round of 16 and the girls were brilliant from the first whistle.
The victory completes a Houdini-like escape to top the group after the devastating loss against Nigeria on Friday. The goal was initially ruled out due to offside but after a VAR check it was deemed Steph Catley was behind the last Canadian defender as she rushed down the left wing into space. Despite the limited opportunities the Matildas extended their lead with a frantic goal to Mary Fowler in the 34th minute sending the Melbourne crowd into a craze.Within minutes the party was back on and the crowd was back celebrating.
The pressure of keeping Australia’s World Cup campaign alive appeared to get to Gustavsson who was yellow carded just before half. The crowd at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium was in full voice as the Matildas banged home their third goal of the night. Picture: Mark Stewart
