The 23-player Matildas squad for the FIFA Women's World Cup have released a powerful statement calling on the sport's governing body and Football Australia to provide equal pay and opportunities.
It has called on Australian fans, Football Australia, FIFA and other people in positions of power to help grow the women’s game by providing more money to support the players.
“We call on all those in positions of power across football, business and politics to come on this journey with us to make women’s football as big as it can be here and around the world.” However, the women’s prize pool also includes preparation fees which means the actual money on offer equates to $US110 million which is only a quarter of the men’s, whose preparation fees were not factored into the $US440 million total.
