OPINION: In 2007 in China, the Matildas went unnoticed into the World Cup and pulled off a string of surprises. As one player recalls, it was “the start of the rise of women’s football for us”.
In the backblocks of China 16 years ago, the Matildas arrived largely unnoticed for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and quietly set about making their mark at the very top of the sport.
“As underdogs, we didn’t get the limelight. Australia has always been that way, so we just got on with it,” former midfielder Caitlin Munoz said. Perks also came with playing in such a top-tier tournament, which Munoz says, back then, were a novelty. The hotels were high quality, for example, and the beds comfortable. But the money for the team only went so far, and getting laundry done was costly.
