A large fire that broke out in a south-western Sydney scrap metal factory this morning continues to 'burn fiercely' with several firefighting crews attempting to extinguish the blaze.

Six fire trucks and 22 firefighters first arrived to the scene this morning, but given the intensity of the fire, several more crews were deployed to speed up extinguishing efforts.

FRNSW have warned people to be extremely cautious of the “toxic” fumes being emitted in the area, as it is expected to be many hours of work before the fire can be put out. “40 firefighters continue to fight a fire in a scrap metal yard, the fire is contained but continues to burn fiercely in the centre,” they said on Twitter.A FRSNW spokesperson also said the metals at the facility were acting as an accelerant for combustion, meaning the fire was “significantly” being fuelled up.

Surrounding roads have been closed off and anyone in the vicinity is urged to take extreme precaution.
