Hospital sources reported scenes of massive violence, with bodies lined up as far as the eye can see and the morgue full. Videos showing chaos in the street and numerous bodies lying on the ground circulated on social media. The incident began with a disputed referee decision, leading to fan invasions of the pitch.
The match was part of a tournament honouring Guinea’s junta leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, who seized power in a September 2021 coup and is seeking to run in presidential elections. N’Zerekore, with a population of about 200,000 people, is located 570 kilometres from the capital, Conakry
