Local candidates in Marikina City, known for its recurring flooding, are proposing ambitious solutions to address this persistent issue. These include the construction of a Wawa Dam and a water retention facility, along with regional cooperation with neighboring municipalities to mitigate flood risks.

Marikina, a city notorious for its recurrent flooding, is seeing local candidates proposing ambitious solutions to tackle this persistent issue. During Rappler’s “Kape, Kandidato, Komunidad” election forum, mayoral candidate Stella Quimbo, alongside other candidates vying for local office, outlined plans to address the city’s vulnerability to flooding.

Quimbo, who is also seeking a House comeback as 2nd District representative, emphasized the urgency of building multiple dams in Wawa, along with a dedicated water retention facility. “The revised plan now consists of building three dams in roughly the same area, along with a water retention facility,” Quimbo stated. She projected a completion timeline of 2032, contingent upon securing a loan to cover the estimated P150 billion cost. The Wawa Dam project, Quimbo explained, is crucial for mitigating flood risks in Marikina, which often serves as a catch basin for floodwaters originating from neighboring towns like Antipolo, San Mateo, and Montalban. This regional aspect of the flooding problem underscores the need for collaborative efforts with these municipalities. Further adding to the complexity, Quimbo pointed out that a significant portion of the garbage clogging Marikina’s drainage systems originates from these neighboring areas, some of which are not part of the Metro Manila Council. This necessitates forging alliances and coordinating efforts with these towns to effectively address the issue. Other candidates echoed the importance of comprehensive flood control measures. Construction of pumping stations and modernization of Marikina’s drainage system are ongoing projects. Marikina 1st District Representative candidate Koko Pimentel, also running for mayor, emphasized the need for stricter enforcement against illegal logging in neighboring areas, as deforestation exacerbates flooding. Pimentel stressed, “The bottom line is that flooding is not just a Marikina problem — it’s a Metro Manila problem.” Recognizing this, he and other candidates proposed establishing stronger regional collaborations to combat this shared challenge.
