PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways to accelerate the retrofitting and complete restoration of the iconic San Juanico Bridge to alleviate the burden of residents, businesses and travelers in Samar and Tacloban provinces. Marcos issued the directive at the roll out of Phases 2 and 3 of the National Fiber Backbone Project in Palo, Leyte.
Marcos said more than P500 million has already been allocated to restore the bridge’s load limit. While there are still challenges, the chief executive, however, noted some improvements to ease traffic flow on the bridge. Citing reports by the Philippine Coast Guard , transport of essential goods has significantly improved wherein the wait to move perishable cargo now only takes one to two hours. Non-perishable goods, meanwhile, experience delays of about two to four hours.
