DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian stated that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s administration aims to end hunger in the Philippines by 2028 through the Walang Gutom Program (WGP). The program, institutionalized as the government’s flagship anti-hunger program, was pilot tested in 2023 and has reached 300,000 households. The administration plans to scale up the program to 600,000 beneficiaries in 2024 and ultimately 1 million. The WGP aims to reduce involuntary hunger among Filipinos from low-income households and promote social and behavioral change by teaching families how to prepare nutritious, affordable meals.

Ending hunger through the Walang Gutom Program will be one of the legacies of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian said.

“No administration has been bold to say that they want to end hunger. It’s a basic sustainable development goal that up to now hasn’t been addressed by this country,” the DSWD chief said. Gatchalian said the result of the pilot shows the effectiveness of the program but also gives policy recommendations such as improving the meal proportions and the per capita cost.Last year, the WGP reached 300,000 households which is 100 percent of its target beneficiaries in 2024.
