The President disputed criticisms that his trip to Davos to attend the WEF was lavish, maintaining that the event was vital in luring investors to the Philippines and in preparing the country for the “new economy.” | onenewsph

“I am pleased with the progress we have made during our crucial participation in the WEF, a truly global multi stakeholder platform. The trip has yielded beneficial outcomes relative to new trade and investment opportunities and key partnerships forged to support our development program,” Marcos said.
He also highlighted his administration’s economic policies, including the Philippine Development Plan and the Eight-Point Socioeconomic Agenda. “We asked them what do you think would be most advantageous for the Philippines so as to allow the potential investments that you are thinking about bringing into the Philippines and how the fund would be best designed to service that investment,” Marcos said.
An eighth tycoon, Manuel V. Pangilinan, whose portfolio includes telecommunications giants PLDT and Smart, also showed support for the chief executive’s attendance at the WEF by showing up at the dinner hosted by the chief executive officers for the President in Davos Wednesday night, Jan. 18. Diokno earlier said Marcos successfully presented to the international community a fundamentally sound Philippine economy, describing the President’s participation in the annual meeting of the WEF as “path-breaking.”
The Makabayan bloc in Congress earlier said it was planning to call for an inquiry into the trip and find out who paid for the delegation’s travel expenses, as reports claimed at least 70 people accompanied the President to Davos.Marcos disputed criticisms that his trip to Davos to attend the WEF was lavish, maintaining that the event was vital in luring investors to the Philippines and in preparing the country for the “new economy.
“They came here on their own. They stayed in their own places. They made their own arrangements. Although they are technically part of the delegation. So, the delegation essentially just consists of the Cabinet secretaries, myself, the Speaker and of course the staff that support them,” the President said.“We don’t have that many people the government is paying for,” he said.
“So that’s why we tried to make sure that whatever comes up, we’re ready to process it, we’re ready to negotiate, we’re ready to do what needs to be done.” House Speaker Martin Romualdez claimed that members of the Philippine delegation have impressed the WEF attendees and have demonstrated that the Philip-pines is a viable investment destination. A number of companies have expressed interest to invest in the country, he added.
Aside from the Speaker, the lawmakers who joined the trip were former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Sen. Mark Villar, Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Marcos III and Tingog party list Rep. Yedda Romualdez. “This is a process. You don’t go one time and you come home and you know, everybody is going to invest one trillion dollars already. It’s not like that. We have to introduce them to the Philippines again. We have to ask them to come to The Philippines,” he added.
